Technology in the news can “cloud” the truth

Cloud computing represents one of the largest new technology developments since the demise of the mainframe. Like anything this radical there are those who are embracing it with open arms and others who are holding back with fear.

Unfortunately, the reason for both can often be the result of the same misinformation being circulated. If you are following the news and are finding yourself a bit confused, take a look at:

The top 5 truths behind what the cloud is not“.

You may be surprised.

Computer security starts with a good password

Computer security is no small task. Protecting against malware, theft of data, denial of service, etc. is critical to successfully protecting your business. A good starting point is strong password protection; insuring that access to the device is limited to those who should have it. While there are a number of device solutions that help in this area (e.g. biometric scanners, smartcards, etc.), you can’t overlook the easiest of solutions, a strong password.

See the following article: Creating strong passwords is easier than you think

Start simple and go from there.

Continuity or Catastrophe: Planning for the worst and expecting the best.

“Business continuance (sometimes referred to as business continuity) describes the process and procedures an organization puts in place to ensure that essential functions can continue during and after a disaster. Business continuance planning seeks to prevent interruption of mission-critical services, and to reestablish full functioning as swiftly and smoothly as possible.” (Source: techtarget.com)

This may sound simple but poor planning can lead a business straight to failure.

Malware is Everywhere

No matter what type of technology you use, the odds are that you will encounter some element of Malware over the course of time.

From WikiPedia:

Should you happen to become affected or infected with Malware, its a good idea to understand the various types so you can recover from any problems that it creates.

Support is ending for Windows XP and Office 2003 – April 8th, 2014

Keeping your technology up-to-date is good for your productivity and security—as well as your bottom line.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) and Office 2003 will be reaching end of support in April 2014. We want to help you avoid the risk of running an unsupported version of Windows & Office, and to assist with your IT planning for 2012. The objective of this letter is to highlight the potential risks involved with the upcoming end of support of these products and to outline the options available to mitigate these risks.

What is the situation and potential risk?

Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will no longer be supported from April 8, 2014 onwards. After this date, Microsoft will not provide any public support for these products, including security patches, non-security hotfixes or incident support.
Running Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 in your environment after their end of support date may expose your company to potential risks, such as:

  • Security & Compliance Risks – Unsupported and unpatched environments are vulnerable to security risks. This may result in an officially recognized control failure by an internal or external audit body, leading to suspension of certifications, and/or public notification of the organization’s inability to maintain its systems and customer information.
  • Lack of Independent Software Vendor (ISV) & Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Support – A recent industry report from Gartner Research suggests “many independent software vendors (ISVs) are unlikely to support new versions of applications on Windows XP in 2011; in 2012, it will become common”. And it may stifle access to hardware innovation: Gartner Research further notes that in 2012, most PC hardware OEMs will stop supporting Windows XP on the majority of their new PC models.
  • What are the available options?

  • Upgrade – This option affords customers the best return on investment by deploying a modern PC with Windows 7 Enterprise and Office 2010. Whether you’re a small business or the largest corporation with offices worldwide, moving to a modern PC with Windows 7 Enterprise and Office 2010 offers your business the ability to improve productivity for your employees and increase operational efficiency through improved PC security and management.
  • To help customers with the migration/deployment process, Jefric Consulting offers several options including proof of concept (POC) and production pilot programs, to help you achieve a successful upgrade to Windows 7 Enterprise and Office 2010.

  • Purchase a Custom Support contract through Premier Support to stay on unsupported products – If, for any reason, you decide to remain on Windows XP SP3 or Office 2003 after support ends, you have the option to purchase Custom Support. As a condition of buying a Custom Support contract, you must have a Premier Support agreement and Microsoft asks that you have a migration plan in place. The cost of Custom Support is significantly higher than regular support, and rises annually due to the rising costs of supporting a legacy product.
  • Do nothing – Microsoft recommends customers avoid this option for it can put you at risk of potential security and compliance issues.
  • Where can you find more information?

  • Full details on Microsoft product support lifecycle is available at: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle
  • Full details on end of support for Windows XP and Office 2003 is available at: www.microsoft.com/endofsupport
  • Full details on Microsoft deployment guidance, training and free deployment tools for your IT Professionals at: www.microsoft.com/springboard
  • We can work with you to help you upgrade your PCs for today’s business environment. Contact us if you would like a personalized evaluation of your current PCs.

Are you running Windows Server 2003? Time to Upgrade!

In the year 2012 it is amazing how many small (and some large) businesses are still running Windows Server 2003. Windows Server 2012 was just released this month, representing a jump forward in 4 versions since Windows 2003 (2003R2, 2008, 2008R2 and 2012). Don’t you think it is time to upgrade?

Windows Server 2003 came out in May of 2005, service pack 1 in March of the same year and service pack 2 in March of 2007. Mainstream support for all of these products ended in July of 2010, over two years ago.

Extended support begins when mainstream support ends, and will terminate on July 14, 2015. Extended support refers to the time when Microsoft will no longer provide new non-security “hotfixes” for the product. The only other updates available are done by opening a paid support case. (see: “An explanation of Extended Support phase for business & Developer products“).

Application compatibility is very often the reason why upgrades are not performed. One would hope, however that the application provider has kept up with technology and has a new version (with new features and functionality).

Do you want to run your business on a product like this? Don’t you want to take advantage of the many improvements that have been made over the 9 years since the release of Windows Server 2003? Don’t wait until your machine fails to find out you are on your own. Plan for a start the upgrade process now.

    Disaster Recovery vs. Business Continuity

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity are very often presented and discussed side-by-side; they are however two very different tasks to address and problems to solve, each with different solutions.
