Download a fresh copy of Windows

Having a fresh set of Windows installation media can come in handy for many troubleshooting tasks, especially when you’re replacing the system drive on a Windows PC and you don’t have an image backup to restore.

Microsoft offers free downloads of full installation media for all supported desktop versions of Windows. Just go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/ and choose your version.

For Windows 7, you’ll need to supply a valid product key to complete the download process. That key must be from a full retail copy. Windows 7 upgrade keys, MSDN and enterprise keys, and OEM keys from a PC manufacturer are not eligible. After your key is verified, choose a 32-bit or 64-bit architecture to finish downloading the edition associated with your key.

For Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, no product key is required to complete the download (although you will need either a key or a digital license to activate the installation). Instead, you can download the Media Creation Tool, which allows you to create either bootable media (USB flash drive or DVD) or an ISO file. Run the tool, select a language and edition, and follow the step-by-step instructions to create your installation media.
